Mossad chief: Israel less important to US

Dagan worried by changes in US approach to Israel, says America takes softer approach, avoids using force to solve conflict

Mossad chief Meir Dagan is concerned by the change in US positions and influence on Israel. “There are fewer Israeli assets in the US,” he said in the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting on Tuesday. “Israel’s importance was greater when there was conflict between the blocs, while this year there has been a decrease (in Israel’s importance).”

Dagan gave an overview of the situation to MKs and noted, “If in the 90s the US was a ‘global policeman,’ a power that could solve conflicts, in the first decade of the millennium the US’s power to solve conflicts is limited. The election of (US President Barack) Obama was a declaration that it was adopting a softer approach and did not want to use force to solve conflicts. It has been viewed as weakness and influences Israel’s difficulty in diplomatic maneuvers.”

According to Dagan, the US ability to create processes of change is limited.

“It is possible to see that during the last few years there has been less cooperation in the political arena between Israel and the US,” he said. “The current administration certainly thinks that Israel’s handling of the Palestinian issue does not suit the present US approach, which says the solution to the conflict must be according to the Clinton vision, within the 67 borders.”

Answering a question about the possibility of an imposed solution, raised by rightwing MKs, Dagan said that such a solution has already arisen between Israel and the US, but then disappeared.

“But we must take future steps into account, particularly after the mid-term Congress elections,” he warned. “An imposed solution will be a last option and not the preferred option – but this option exists and is used as a whip to goad the two sides. Events such as (the lethal flotilla affair) are likely to go out of control and the situation could deteriorate to extreme scenarios.”

Dagan also referred to the Iranian nuclear threat. “Iran’s willingness to agree to the Brazil and Turkey deal (to transfer uranium for enrichment) is like pulling a rabbit out of a hat, intended to divide the international community at the last minute, with the aim of avoiding or postponing sanctions in the UN Security Council.”

The Mossad chief noted that the Congress elections in July will influence the Iran decision.

“Iran is progressing with the latest centrifuges, but are encountering unexpected technological difficulties,” he said. “They are not progressing as they would like, and this certainly influences the length of time required to achieve their aim.” He added, “Achieving their aim of nuclear capabilities will prevent any future threat against the regime.”

Flotillas and the Wars of Public Opinion:

By George Friedman

On Sunday, Israeli naval forces intercepted the ships of a Turkish nongovernmental organization (NGO) delivering humanitarian supplies to Gaza. Israel had demanded that the vessels not go directly to Gaza but instead dock in Israeli ports, where the supplies would be offloaded and delivered to Gaza. The Turkish NGO refused, insisting on going directly to Gaza. Gunfire ensued when Israeli naval personnel boarded one of the vessels, and a significant number of the passengers and crew on the ship were killed or wounded.

Will the Canadian and International media report accurately and fairly as anti-Israel activists violently resist an IDF naval boarding with tragic results?

In the early hours of Monday 31 May, Israeli naval commandos boarded a flotilla of vessels heading for Gaza. What happened next has created a major media storm as, according to reports, over a dozen anti-Israel activists have died and many more injured, including Israeli soldiers.
Israel’s critics have been quick to condemn the incident, using it to inflame anti-Israel sentiment. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has already termed what is undoubtedly a serious incident as a “massacre”. Will this be the latest in a long list of incidents that have been distorted and misrepresented to cause Israel the maximum amount of damage to its image?

Connected to Terror: Who is Behind the Flotilla?

The organizations and passengers behind the Gaza flotilla have been variously described as “peace activists” and “humanitarian organizations”. This could not be further from the truth. The primary objective of this flotilla was not to deliver aid packages to Gaza but to spread anti-Israel propaganda in cooperation with Gaza’s Hamas rulers.

Playing a central role in the flotilla is the Turkish IHH organization, which besides its legitimate philanthropic activities is also, according to the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, a supporter of radical Islamic networks, including Hamas, and at least in the past, even global jihad elements.

Special Alert: Boats, Bias and Big LiesA simple click can help win the battle and turn the tide of public opinion and media reporting of the Gaza flotilla incident.

In some of the latest video footage released by the IDF, it is clear that the Israeli naval commandos were certainly unprepared for the violence they encountered, including being attacked with live fire.

– Real weapons, real weapons!

– They have real weapons?

– Yes, yes, real weapons. They are firing on us!

It’s not too late to counter the wave of anti-Israel sentiment unleashed by the events surrounding the boarding of the Turkish Mavi Marnara ship and the deaths of nine of its passengers. For the claims of so-called “peace activists” that they were unarmed and non-violent victims of Israeli brutality is laughable in the face of the openly available video evidence taken during the incident.

Jerusalem Post editor-in-chief David Horovitz explains the powerful effect of the IDF’s video footage:

for some of the foreign press, who had been less willing to accept [IDF Spokesman] Benayahu’s improbable account of commandos overpowered by civilians, the footage was a revelation.
“I saw it, and I realized I had done Israel an injustice,” one of my foreign colleagues said on Monday, with admirable candor. “At that point, and only at that point, I understood what the Israelis had been saying.”

The IDF videos reveal the truth about what took place. But we can’t rely on the media to spread the word to the general public. We must make every effort to forward the videos and updates to our networks and post them across the Internet.

Media Unable to Ignore the Evidence

When confronted with the compelling video evidence, many media outlets (though not all) have been unable to bat away the images of Israeli soldiers attacked with clubs, iron poles and knives.

The UK’s Channel 4 News invited a British naval analyst and counter-terror expert to analyze IDF footage:

Peace Activism or Military Preparations?

Since when do “peace activists” have access to sophisticated night vision equipment, rifle scopes and bullet proof vests? These photos taken by the IDF of items found on board the Mavi Marnara would indicate that the portrayal of non-violent humanitarians interested only in distributing aid to Gaza is thoroughly inaccurate.

The equipment, along with the clubs and knives found by the IDF on board the Mavi Marnara is evidence of the premediated nature of the violence perpetrated by those on board.

The photo above shows one of the electric saws used to saw metal rods off of the Marnara’s deck. These rods were used to attack the Israeli soldiers boarding the ship.
Activists even threw stun grenades as this footage shows.
In addition, large quantities of cash were found on board ready to be transferred to Hamas upon landing in Gaza. The Turkish IHH organization responsible for the Mavi Marnara is an open supporter of Hamas and has been implicated in the recruitment and funding of Islamic terrorism, including al-Qaeda. (See here for more information.)

What Happens Now?

The flotilla’s cargo is being off-loaded in Ashdod and the humanitarian items transferred overland to Gaza in accordance with standard operating procedures while the participants of the flotilla are to be repatriated as expediently as possible.
Israel does not prevent aid from reaching Gaza via established land-based crossings and there is no lack of humanitarian aid to the Strip. Israel repeatedly proposed that the flotilla organizers land in the port of Ashdod and transfer their aid to Gaza through the existing overland crossings. Had the aid been delivered directly to Ashdod in the first place, as Israel offered, the entire tragic incident could have been avoided.

Outside of the Israeli Consulate to L.A. on Memorial Day, Daniel a Jewish high-school student defiantly waved the Israeli flag through a crowd of Israel-haters – to defend what he perceives as the Israeli Marines’ justified handling of the Flotilla blockade when they came under attack.

The L.A.P.D. had to establish a human wall to …  intervene to protect Daniel (and afterwards, a couple of other Israel supporters) who stood-up in opposition to the mob mentality of the Gaza protestors, with their version of the facts of the case and rights of expression.

When a Muslim protestor cries, “Allahu akhbar” to incite the crowd against the Jewish boy – the opposition to Israel’s politics become subordinated to the perception of “Holy War” as a driving force of the Muslim side of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

An American-born, young woman of Palestinian heritage rallying to “Free Palestine,” reveals that it means more than just drawing-down Israel’s presence in the West Bank. When she saw the Israeli-American demonstrator, she shrieked, “I’ll kill him! You killed my family! Take that flag down! You killed my people!” In DemoCast’s original video, she confesses that the objective of their movement is not for Palestinian autonomy to co-exist with Israel, but to destroy Israel and conquer it for Palestinians to rule.
