Israel Opens Wider Eye on Iran,

As the Iranian nuclear threat intensifies, Israel is boosting its intelligence-gathering capabilities. Last night Israel launched its latest spy satellite named “Ofek 9”, joining five other spy satellites.

The satellite was successfully launched from the Palmachim Air Force base South of Tel Aviv and is expected to improve Israel’s coverage of sensitive areas, especially in Iran.

“The more satellites you have in the orbit, the less chance that the other side can do something that will go undetected,” Tal Inbar, Head of Space Research Center tells Fox News.

The new satellite will be able to detect objects as small as 28 inches.

Another interesting aspect is that, this is Israel’s own satellite technology. Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak was incredibly pleased with the launch, saying: “The launch is a technological and operational achievement. Few states, especially states the size of Israel, are capable of handling such a complex challenge”.

First photos from the new spy satellite could come as early as Friday.
